Robert Brian Worley was born October 4, 1949 in Riverside, California, the third son of Jeannette Nielsen Worley and Donald Lewis Worley. During his childhood, he and his brothers were frequent visitors to the Victorian house on Orange Street where their grandparents Jo-Jo and Al lived. There, and later at the new Nielsen house nestled against the avocado grove off of Firethorn and Mockingbird Canyon, they were exposed to Jo-Jo's enamels and mosaics, and occasionally watched her at work in her studio, where Brian had the opportunity to work beside her learning the basics of mosaic cutting.
Later, while attending Pomona College, Brian
started working at the Millard Sheets mosaic studio on Foothill Boulevard, where, under the supervision of his Aunt Nancy Colbath, and later, Denis O'Connor and Sue Hertel, he worked on a number of the large murals Millard Sheets was commissioned to do for 80 Home Savings and Loan buildings, and delivered many of them to sites for installation.
Since the Sheets studio days Brian has, among other art-related projects, created and installed a number of murals on his own, has continued his work on mosaic and cut glass representations in a number of formats, has studied mosaic in Venice, Italy, cleaned and restored four large mosaic walls in St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westwood, California, and manned a mosaic instructional booth at the LA County Fair in Pomona. More recently Brian has contracted on a number of projects saving mosaic and tile murals from buildings slated for destruction, including removal from its original Santa Monica site of the 40' x 16' mosaic mural, "Pleasures Along the Beach" and reinstallation above the entrance to the Hilbert Museum in Orange, CA.
Brian owns and operates Brian Worley Art and Restoration, Inc.
